The dried bark of Phellodendtron chinense Schneid. contains berberine 4%-8%. The dried bark of Phellodendtron amurense Rupr. contains berberine 0.6%-2.5%. The dried rhizome of Coptis chinensis Franch. contains berberine 4%-10%.
Berberine has a stable structure and exists in the form of quaternary ammonium salt. The extraction process of berberine is solvent extraction, and the active ingredients are extracted from the bark by immersion, percolation, reflux, etc.
